Corfu (Kerkyra) is one of the most cosmopolitan and most frequented Greek Islands. It is the northernmost of the seven Ionian Islands and the second largest of the cluster. Visitors flock to Corfu Greece every year to lie on its splendid beaches, to experience its impressive culture, and to be immersed in its exciting nightlife. Corfu Sightseeing & Attractions
The island gets its name "Polis ton Korifon", which mean "City of the Peaks" that describes the two fortresses in the capital town. While visiting Corfu (Kerkyra) visitors will get the feeling that they have stepped back into time due to the wonderful Venetian architecture and quaint settlements throughout the island, while at the same time Corfu is a progressive island hosting many business, cultural and commercial events.

Corfu is full of sites of historical interest, such as the Old Fortress, the New Fortress, the canon, Spianada Square (with its buildings) and Liston Promenade, and the Archaeological, Byzantine and Asian Art Museums in the capital town, as well as Achillion (Austrian Princess Sissy's Summer Palace) in Gastouri and the Monastery of Zoodochou Pigis in Paleokastritsa. The island also has many monasteries and churches worth visiting. During the summer months philharmonic orchestras perform at the lovely kiosk in Spianada Square.

Corfu Beaches

Other lovely Corfu beaches are the bays of Agios Georgios and Paleokastritsa, Arillas, Peroulades, and Sidari on the northwestern coast of the island, and Agios Gordios, Glyfada, Chalikounas, Issos, and Agios Georgios on the western and southwestern side of Corfu. The beaches of Kavos, Messonghi, and Moraitika on the southeastern coast are lovely, while Acharavi, Roda, Dasia, and Ipsos, located on the northeastern side are also wonderful.

Corfu Cuisine
While in Corfu, try the local dishes such as pastitsada (cock or beef in red sauce with macaroni or pasta), sofrito (beef in a wine and garlic sauce), bourdeto (spicy fish stew) and quom-quat (either beverage or sweet).
